SEI Certifies First Respiratory Protective
Smoke Hood Escape Device

McLean, VA . . . . June 2008: The Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) is pleased to announce that the first SEI certification for a Respiratory Protective Smoke Hood Escape Device has been issued to the standard, ANSI/ISEA 110-2003, American National Standard for Air-Purifying Respiratory Protective Smoke Escape Devices.

The goal of this standard is to establish requirements for the design, performance, testing and certification of air purifying respiratory protective smoke devices for the immediate emergency evacuation without entry/reentry of adult civilians.

The purpose of the standard is to provide minimum requirements for respiratory protective escape devices that provide limited protection for adult civilian escape from the byproducts of fire, including particulate matter, carbon monoxide, other toxic gases, and the effects of radiant heat.

Performance testing includes requirements for carbon dioxide inhalation, donning time, resistance to breathing, filtration of particulates, inward leakage testing, light transmission, field of vision, water leakage, gas breakthrough, inhalation air temperature, breathing resistance to soot particulates, heat and flame resistance, resistance to molten polymeric drips, resistance to radiant heat and corrosion resistance.

Independent testing for the SEI certification program for Respiratory Protective Smoke Hood Escape Devices is coordinated by SEI’s contract testing laboratory, Intertek Testing Services (ITS), Cortland, NY.

SEI has issued certification to the following model:

iEvac® Fire Escape, Model Number EBP-180 manufactured by Elmridge Protection Products of Boynton Beach, FL. www.elmridgeprotection.com

In addition to initial compliance testing of all Respiratory Protective Smoke Hood Escape Devices, manufacturers who participate in the SEI certification program must pass a rigorous quality assurance audit of their manufacturing facility and operate in accordance with ISO 9001. Also, all products carrying the SEI label are required to be re-certified annually. Therefore, all products must be re-tested annually at Intertek, and the manufacturing facility must continue to successfully meet all SEI quality assurance requirements during follow-up audits.

Further details on the above certified model and the most current version of the SEI Certified Product List, can be accessed on SEI’s web site, www.SEInet.org, by anyone, anywhere in the world at any time of the day. The Certified Product List provides product model names and numbers, manufacturer’s names, addresses, and contact numbers.
